Hi guys,I wanted to build something different,so I picked up this '79 Firebird T/A and figured the 425 would drop in easyly on the stock mounts but it didn't.Took me a week to figure out the engine placement, trim the frame mounts, build adapter brackets to fit them to the engine and fabricate frame cradles to bolt them on.beauty of this setup is the way everything fits like it belongs in there. All GMparts were used and no welding or torching was required. Hand tools,a hacksaw, drill, vise and hoist are all that's needed to do this job. There isn't much clearance in the engine bay afterwards but there is enough.I used the shortshaft TH400 from the '78 caddy I got the engine from,it is longer than a TH350,so a shortened driveshaft with 400 yoke was required.I performed the whole operation on a small budget but spent much time eyeballing, measuring and figuring where everything would fit.The engine sits lower and farther back so the scoop was moved forward by driling out the rivets, shifting and marking the holes, then adapting quarter inch aluminum pate to brdge the gap.The breather is stock caddy, the hole in the air cleaner side is opened up to 1" for a grommet to fit it in.The forward a frame bolt needs a quarter inch of exposed thread trimmed off on the passenger side for exhaust clearance.the stock exhaust Y pipe fits if the heat riser valve is gutted and has it's shaft plugged. On the driver side, there is just enough clearance for the steering, brake booster, and wiper motor. The stock caddy radiator and hoses fit perfectly but a bit of pounding on the bottom of the support is needed. The alternator & starter fit on the passenger side,so does the battery, but you must extend the wiring. The transmission crossmember is moved back for the mount and new frame fasteners holes drilled for it.That's about it except for minor details.I've got pictures coming up soon.
